Encountering Christ in the Psalms: Friday Retreats
Presented by Fr. Timothy Peters, professor of Biblical Theology at Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo, CA.
Where: Saint Bonaventure Church, Huntington Beach, CA
When: Fridays, February 23rd, March 1st and March 8th from 7:15PM – 8:45PM
Presentations will include (30 min. each)
- Introduction – Understanding the basics about the Book of Psalms and Hebrew Poetry
- Psalm 1, 19, 119 ‒ The significance of the first Psalm and the importance of the Law/Torah for the ancient Israelites.
- Psalms 2; 45; 72‒ Understanding the importance of the Royal Psalms in the Psalter.
- Psalms 89; 110; 132 ‒ Royal Psalms and Messianic hope, discovering the importance of Royal Psalms in the New Testament and in Christian Prayer.
- Psalms 32; 51; 103 ‒ Psalms that speak about our need for forgiveness.
- Psalms 95‒100 ‒ Enthronement Psalms, public processions and the Lord’s Eternal Kingship.
- Psalms 120-134 – The Psalms of Ascent and their importance for Feast days and pilgrims who traveled to Jerusalem.
- Psalms 145‒150 ‒ The final words of ‘praise’ in the Psalter, why do the final Psalms in the Psalter continually use the exhortation Hallelujah [Alleluia]?
- Psalm 22 ‒ Reading the 22nd Psalm with the perspective of the early Church
The Catholic Biblical Institute in the Diocese of Orange presents these short retreats with the goal of inspiring the faithful to continually study Sacred Scripture. All are welcome to attend. Those wishing to take more courses in The Biblical institute may take these retreats as part of their introductory preparation. More information will be provided during our retreat.
