Adoption & Foster Care

OVERVIEW

Whether you are a foster parent or an adoptive parent, opening your heart and home to a child is a wonderful and life-changing experience for parent and child alike.

In 2022-2023, there were an average of 3,029 dependents of the court and 2,126 children in out-of-home care each month, on average, in Orange County (29th Annual Report on the Conditions of Children in Orange County). Most foster children need temporary foster homes until they are eventually able to return to their birth families; others, however, need permanent homes through adoption.

Foster parents provide on-going care and nurturing for children that have been removed from their families because of abuse or neglect. Foster parents also work with the children’s birth parents and/or relatives to help families reunify. Foster parents become active members of teams dedicated to obtaining the best possible outcome for each child. Foster parents might also assist the team in developing permanent plans for children in situations where safe reunification is not possible.

Adoptive parents provide new families for children who cannot be safely returned to their birth families. An adoptive parent makes a lifetime commitment to a child.

UPCOMING EVENTS

May is Foster Family Appreciation Month, and it is important to appreciate the families who do so much to help those in crisis in our community. There is no better way to love our neighbors and care for the orphans of today than by recognizing these faithful families in the work that they do.

LHNL is a collaborative movement of faith communities providing the greatest display of love ever experienced. In partnership with FosterAll, faith communities across SoCal are uniting to share the call to foster and adopt the thousands of vulnerable children in foster care. FosterAll, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to the recruitment and support of foster families. For over 39 years, FosterAll has guided thousands of parents through the foster/adopt process with more than 4,000 children placed in their homes.

During the campaign months of May and June, FosterAll’s team will navigate the foster care system for parents who have expressed interest in foster or adoption, assist faith leaders with information on the need and provide support throughout the campaign.
